UPC (Universal Product Code)
The barcode number printed on a retail package. A UPC identifies one specific product and pack size, which makes it a much more reliable way to match a label to another record (such as an FDA recall notice) than a product or company name.
Example
A recall notice that lists a product's UPC can be matched to the DSLD label carrying the same UPC, without relying on similar-looking product names.
